This new book by David Michaels returns to the subject he explored in his previous book, "Doubt is their product." That first book was largely intended for an academic audience. This new one goes much farther, written in a pithy, accessible style that will open the eyes of people unfamiliar with the ways of the tobacco, chemical, fossil fuel and other industries as they defend their produce using guile, disinformation, distortion, lies and orchestrated expensive and often brilliantly planned and executed campaigns to make sure regulators and the public don't mess with their income streams.The book is quite remarkable for the wide array of industries that Michaels documents to use the "tobacco playbook", including the National Football League, the opiod industry, the chemical industry, VW's diesel scam, climate denialists, alcohol and the sugar industry, and much more. After an introductory chapter that lays out the basic, shared features of disinformation campaigns used to manufacture doubt, Michaels presents a series of case studies from these different industries, showing what they did and often revealing the answers to that perennial question: what did they know and when did they know it. All too often "the when" begins far in the past and the parade of lies stretches over decades of deceit.His prose is concise, penetrating and accessible. The book may not be as funny as Chris Buckley's "Thank you for smoking" or as dramatic as Mark Ruffalo's "Dark Waters" (although Michaels does tell that sordid story about DuPont in these pages) or as hair-raising as George Clooney's "Michael Clayton" but it does reveal the unhappy truth that when a lot of money is at stake, standard practice is for vested interests to do the very wrong thing.
